Nestled within the inner courtyard of a typical Berlin perimeter block, this new construction rises on the foundations of a historic building lost during World War II. The modular timber-concrete hybrid structure enables urban densification, optimising a compact footprint while preserving openness. Apartments, each occupying a single floor, are accessed directly via exterior spaces, culminating in a maisonette with a rooftop terrace. Large windows draw natural light into the 3m high interiors, whilst also creating a connection with the surrounding tree canopy. Through lowering the site’s topography by 80cm, an additional floor was seamlessly integrated, transforming a once-hidden space into a vibrant living environment.
